Brand Place

Pedagogy, Research, Branding

Brand Place is a branding toolkit focused on educating and empowering design students as change makers through the creation of socially responsible branding.

Here students were challenged to work with curators of the Black on Black on Black on Black exhibition at the Krannert Art Museums to create branding strategies that highlighted the legacies and practices of Black Art and Design educators. Students learned methods in the brand design process in order to create socially aware brand strategies for the exhibition.

The final deliverable for this course is a brand strategy that includes: logo, print ad, signage, and branded merchandise that tells the story of the artist or designer each student selected. When making brand decisions I ask them to consider: How can we design a brand that is mindful of the cultural and historical context in which it operates? What narratives are missing about Black creators? How can we create branding that empowers historically marginalized communities and promotes their voices and stories?
