Black Space Protocols

Research, Installation Art, Experiential Participatory Design

Black Space Protocols is an immersive prototype simulation to investigate the potential of culturally situated object-based storytelling as tools for spatial reimagining. The project centers around the concept of spatial justice, which emphasizes the need to create equitable and inclusive spaces that reflect the cultural, social, and historical context of the communities they serve. The first immersive installment of Spatial Protocols debuted in the Black on Black on Black on Black exhibition at the Krannert Art Museum in Fall 2022.

The project explores how spatial narratives can be constructed and communicated through objects and their associated cultural meanings, with a particular focus on the experiences and perspectives of Black communities. Through immersive simulations, the project invites participants

to engage with these narratives in a dynamic and interactive way, allowing them to explore the possibilities of spatial reimagining and envision new futures for their communities.

Black Space Protocols is a project that represents a significant departure from traditional approaches to spatial design and planning. By prioritizing the voices and experiences of historically marginalized communities and using object-based storytelling as a tool for spatial reimagining, the project offers a fresh perspective on the possibilities of equitable and inclusive spatial design. Ultimately, the project serves as an important reminder of the power of design to shape our understanding of space and its potential to promote social justice and cultural equity.
